1829.
The Bengal Sati Resolution was passed on 04 December 1829 by the then Governor General of India, Lord William Bentinck.
It was done to ban the ritual of Sati. The practice of Sati was described as a revolt against human feelings.
In this practice, a woman had to give up her life on her husband's pyre, either voluntarily or by force and the Hindu custom's looked at it as a wife's ultimate devotion to her husband whereas, in reality, it was nothing but human sacrifice.
