Human skin cannot function as a respiratory organ because it has d) All of the above

Characteristics of a respiratory organ

  • A respiratory organ must have a large surface area so that oxygen and other gases can be easily exchanged through the surface because gaseous molecules randomly and have high kinetic energy.
  • The surface layer of the respiratory organ should also be thin enough to ease the diffusion of the gases.
  • The organ should have a sufficient supply of blood or fluid to transmit the gases throughout the body tissues.

Since skin does not possess all of these characteristics. Therefore, it can not function as a respiratory organ in the human body.
