The sperm has to travel a long distance to get to the ovum in the female reproductive organs. The chances of not teaching the destination is very high. Therefore, in order to ensure that at least one sperm reaches the egg to fertilise it, thousands of sperms are produced. On the other hand, as the ovum does not have to do locomotion, only one egg at a time is sufficient enough to ensure that fertilisation takes place.

The male gamete, or sperm, and the female gamete, the egg or ovum, meet in the female's reproductive system. When the sperm fertilizes, or meets, the egg, this fertilized egg is called the zygote. The zygote goes through a process of becoming an embryo and developing into a fetus.
