Humans take in food which is then digested inside the digestive system. Fungi digest food in a different way. They secrete powerful chemicals outside their body. These chemicals help in breaking down organic matter (food) in their environment, resulting in simpler substances. Fungi then take in these simpler substances. Since the actual digestive process takes place outside the organism's body, it is called extracellular digestion. The step where fungi take in simpler substances inside their body is similar to one of the steps of digestion that takes place in humans. Where does that step take place in humans? 1 mouth 2 stomach 3 small intestine 4 anus
