the irony of the lesson is that Hughie thought that the model who was being painter by his painter friend, Alan Trevor was a poor beggar. he gives him a sovereign, when he himself is not that rich.
Later when he comes to know from Trevor that the 'beggar' was actually a Baron and a very wealthy, he feels mortified by his actions.(him giving money to a rich man mistaking him for a beggar)
however, the baron sees his generosity and kindness and sends him a check for 10000 pounds to fulfil the conditions for Hughie .to marry his beloved.
