We were all ashamed of our mother. Our mother always did things to shame us These 2 sentences are from the story of It used to be green onceby Patricia Grace. The main character of this story is the mum, who is very embarrassing and strict to her children. However she is very kind to her friends, relations and neighbours.
In the story, we can see Mum is a shameful, cruel and strict mum. If the children didnt get up when they were told, Mum would drag them out and pull down their pyjama pants and set their bums on the cold lino. Also the children could never win an argument with Mum. Mum has got a loud voice too, She yelled loudly, get up off that road, my girl.
Because Mum is used to being very poor, she only could give her children holey fruit and made 2 togs our of 1 old tog for the kids. Also she doesnt let them have shoes or bags until college, and puts red darns in their clothes. Wednesday is Mums day for shopping. Mum always drives the old car to the shops. The kids felt really ashamed by the way she drove, and because the car had no brakes, the bus had to stop for her. After she won the lotto, she did not change the way she did things.
From her speech, which not only shows she is a strict, embarrassing person; she is a kind person too. Anyone wants a ride! She yelled, theyll have to run and jump in. She helps her relations, friends and neighbours to do shopping, no matter if she is rich or poor.
