The dark brown coloured layer consisting of rotting dead material in the soil is called humus. It provides important nutrients and minerals to the plant and hence it improves the fertility of the soil, but it does not play a role in the water retention of the soil.

Clayey soil holds the most water because its soil particles are extremely fine. Hence they are packed together leaving little space or air and water. As a result this soil retains more water than Loamy and sandy soil.

Loamy soil is the best to grow plants as it has an equal amount of sandy and clayey soil. So, the water retention capacity is neutral.
