Given:

If Adam orders a book from Store X,

The tax rate only applies to the cost of the book.

Comparison of Online Bookstores

                            Store X                       Store Y

Cost of book       $17.00                         $18.00

Tax rate                  6%                                8%

Shipping        10% of cost of the book    FREE

To find:

How much will he owe to the nearest cent?

Solution:

Adam orders the book from store X

∴ The cost of the book = $ 17.00

The tax rate applies only to the cost of the book

∴ The amount of tax = \frac{6}{100} \times 17 = 0.06 \times 17 = \$ \:1.02

The shipping charges apply to the cost of the book

∴ The amount of shipping = \frac{10}{100} \times 17 = \$ \:1.7

Now,

The total amount Adam has to pay for the book is,

= [Cost of book] + [Amount of tax] + [Amount of shipping]

= $17 + $1.02 + $1.7

= $ 19.72

Thus, Adam will owe → option (2)$ 19.72.
