■For Determining oxidation Number you need to know oxidation states of certain elements / groups

1) O.S of Halogens is Usually -1 (Group 17)
Flourine always has -1 oxidation state

2)Oxidation state of hydrogen is usually +1 , may be -1 as in Metal Hydrides : NaH , LiH etc

3)Oxidation state of O , S are usually -2 except
●Peroxide : H2O2 , BaO2 (-1)
●Superoxide : KO2(-1/2)
●Ozonide : KO3 (-1/3)
●OF2 : +2
●O2F2 : +1

4)Remember for an isolated species O.S total is always = 0 unless it has some formal charge

5) Oxidatio state of an element in free state is = 0
6) Oxidation state of an element is any of its allotropic forms is 0

7) ALGEBRIC SUM OF OXIDATION STATE OF ALL ATOMS PRESENT IN A☆ POLYATOMIC ☆NEUTRAL☆ molecule is 0.

●if Molecule is not netral the algebric sum will be = the Charge on the molecule with proper sign
