Mendel's dihybrid cross proofs that the traits are independently inherited. He took two traits of pea plants to check this out. Round and yellows peas which are dominant characters (RRYY) and green and wrinkled peas which are recessive characters (rryy). After cross he got RrYy in F1 which showed round and yellows peas as phenotype. when these RrYy progenies were crossed, the gametes are formed with as many combinations as possible. In this case 16 types. So the two traits, shape and color of peas are not connected to each other cause all possible combinations are formed. So they are independently inherited.

I hope my answer help to u and right
