A catalyst is a substance that enables a chemical reaction to accelerate at a usually faster rate.

In other words,

They speed up reactions that are otherwise very slow.

There are 3 types of catalysts.

  • Homogeneous catalysts
  • Heterogeneous catalysts
  • Biocatalysts

Catalysts work by lowering the amount of energy required for the reaction to take place.

  • Example - Enzymes act as catalysts in the human body
  • Many proteins in the body act as catalysts that help in various different functions in the body.

In a reaction where catalysts are used, a lower activation energy route is taken than the actual reaction route.
