when the chemical reaction is done in a closed container , there will be no change of mass because the mass remains constant,( where particles can neither get in nor get out easily). As particles consist of different atoms and elements there will be a change in mass. Therefore, in an open container or in an open space the particles can get in or may collide, which results in the change of mass.
