The carbon atom in HCN is therefore sp hydribidized. If you draw the Lewis structure for CH4 you'll see that there are FOUR electron groups surrounding the carbon atom (in the form of four single C-H bonds). The carbon atom in CH4 is therefore sp3 hybridized.

The molecular geometry of hydrogen cyanide is linear. A covalent bond is present in the molecule. The carbon in cyanide is the central atom. There is sharing of electrons and carbon is triply bonded to nitrogen and it also forms a single bond with hydrogen.
