Electric double layer is formed when a colloidal partical adsorbs any one kind of ion ie. either positive or negative through selective adsorption on its surface which forms a layer, then thus layer attract the opposite ion and thus forms a double layer, since there is combination of 2 layers with 2 opposite charges it is known as electric double layer.
