Hydrogen and sodium belongs to Group 1 a yet hydrogen forms a covalent bond and sodium forms an ionic bond with chlorine.Why?

hydrogen and chlorine are non metals and covalent bond is always in between non -metals .
ionic bond is in between metal and non metal so sodium is metal and chlorine is non-metal hence they form ionic bond .
