In simple hydrocarbons and noble gasses, D2O is a better solvent than H2O because there is a decrease in the hydrophobic effect in D2O. This is surprising because the hydrogen bonds are stronger in D2O than in H2O. Works with proteins and macromolecules has shown D2O to be a worse solvent than H2O. This is not well understood (as of 2013) and force spectroscopy work is underway to explore the role of solvent hydrogen bonds in protein folding.
