You can react sulfur powder with hydrochloric acid (HCl) at room temperature. The reaction products will be sulfur chloride and hydrogen gas. But when this mixture of Fe and S is heated, a new compound is formed , FeS. FeS is black coloured solid, which then reacts with sulphuric acid to produce hydrogen sulphide gas.

On reaction hydrogen and Sulphur a new gas is formed which has a pungent smell and it smells like rotten eggs.
H₂ + S-----------> H₂S(Hydrogen Disulphide)
