Hydrogen gas is not produce when a metal reacts with nitric acid because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent.it oxidises the hydrogen produced to water and itself gets reduced to any of the nitrogen oxides. But magnesium react to produce hydrogen gas because the acid is dilute and will not act same as in the case with a concentrated one
