Hydrogen gas is not liberated when metal react with concentrated nitric acid because nitric acid is :
• We know that Nitric acid ( HNO3 ) is one of the strong acid.
• It act as oxidizing agent.
•When metal reacts with nitric acid, it oxidizes H2 to H2O and reduce itself to nitrogen oxides.
• Example :
Zn + 4HNO3 => Zn(NO3) + 2NO2 + 2H2O
• Expectations : Mg and Mn reacts with dilute nitric acid to liberate H2 gas.
