Yes , hydrogen gas is not evolved when metals react with nitric acid because hydrogen is very strong oxidizing agent . it oxidize hydrogen gas into water and hence h2 gas is not evolved....

Hydrogen gas is not liberated when metal react with concentrated nitric acid because nitric acid is :

• We know that Nitric acid ( HNO3 ) is one of the strong acid.

• It act as oxidizing agent.

•When metal reacts with nitric acid, it oxidizes H2 to H2O and reduce itself to nitrogen oxides.

• Example :

Zn + 4HNO3 => Zn(NO3) + 2NO2 + 2H2O

• Expectations : Mg and Mn reacts with dilute nitric acid to liberate H2 gas.
