there will be spectrum formed in uv region because as the electron jumps to 2nd orbit the spectm will lie balmer region ie visible region

Answer:

As in the given question the electron jumps from n2 = 4 to n1 = 2 hence these following are the transitions possible:-

4 → 3

4→ 2

3 → 2

Hence there are 3 transitions possible and so, 3 spectral lines are formed.

The general formula by which we can calculate for the number of spectral lines emitted is:-

N = (n2 – n1) (n2 – n1 + 1) /2

From question data we know that N = ( 4 - 2) ( 4 - 2 + 1 )/2 = 3 spectral lines which can also be proved by the above transition showed.
