The first and the foremost characteristic of a metal is that, it is a good reducing agent as it easily loses electron(s) to form cations (positively charged ions).
Hydrogen, despite being a non metal, forms a positively charged ion. It has only one valence electron, which it loses and thus forms a cation. Its valency thus is +1.
Hydrogen is also a good reducing agent.
Example: PbO + H₂ ----> Pb + H₂O
Thus, hydrogen is placed in the metal reactivity series.
