who said you ,,, hydrogen is non metal . It shows dual nature i.e., of Metal as well as non metal. As hydrogen atom have one valence electron so it try to complete duplet as Hellium . In order to this it can loose its one valence electron as well as it can gain one electron. If hydrogen atom loose one electron then it will be considered as Metal otherwise non metal.

In the modern periodic table the position of elements are according to the no of electrons present in them I.e. their atomic number.
As hydrogen has only 1 electro n in it thus its position is justified
