Explanation:

Hydrogen occupies a unique position in modern periodic table due to two reason

1. Both hydrogen and alkali metals have one electron in outermost shell so some of properties of hydrogen are similar to those of alkali metals and hence it plsced in 1st group.

2. Both hydrogen and halogen have one electron less than the nearest insert gas configuration in outermost shell so some properties of hydrogen are similar to halogens and hence it can be placed in group 17.

Justify the statement

Hydrogen is a non-metal, it has been placed at the top of group 1 above the alkali metals because its electronic configuration is similar to alkali metals.

But while discussing alkali metals, hydrogen is not considered. Thus, hydrogen occupies a unique position in modern periodic table.
