Hydrogen should be placed in group 1 as it has valency 1 a tendency to reject an electron and donate one; and period 1 as it has K shell level.

Reasons for abnormality regarding the position of hydrogen:
Similar to alkali metals it has one electron in it valence shell.
Similar to alkali metals it loses one electron to form cation.
Similar to alkali metals it combines with Oxygen, Sulphur and Halogens to form similar compounds.

Similar to halogens, hydrogen exists as a diatomic molecule and combines with metals and non metals to form covalent compounds.

Because of the above reasons their is uncertainity regarding the position of hydrogen.

due to the above uncertainty Hydrogen occupies a different position and has it's own class.

it is placed in 1st group because it has only one electron in its orbital.

SquareRoot256: Really? It is placed in group 1 and period 1. Which era are you living in?
SquareRoot256: The modern periodic table has it in group 1 and period 1
SquareRoot256: It is in period 1 - same as helium so how can you say it is out of periodic table? Lol
KamalDubey: ask a question, there i will attach the picture
SquareRoot256: Hmm all right.
KamalDubey: this will help you most.
KamalDubey: hydrogen has its own class
SquareRoot256: Class as in?
