The state of the hymen is not a reliable indicator of virginity, although it continues to be considered so in certain cultures, andvirginity testing may be done. Minor injuries to the hymen may heal without visible signs of previous injury. A tornhymen may be surgically restored in a procedure called hymenorrhaphy

- The presence or absence of hymen is not a reliable indicator of virginity or sexual experience because hymen is a very thin membrane which exists at the opening of the vagina and it can easily be broken by exersion caused due to heavy exercise, cycling etc.
- This has traditionally been tested by the presence of an intact hymen, which was verified by either a physical examination (usually by a physician, who would provide a certificate of virginity or by a "proof of blood", which refers to vaginal bleeding that results from the tearing of the hymen.
