(i) 144 g of pure water is decomposed by passing electricity .16g of Hydrogen and 128 g of Oxygen are

obtained. Which Chemical Law is illustrated by this statement ?

(ii) Which Postulate of Dalton's Atomic Theory can explain the Law of Definite Proportion ?

Answer:

i ) Law of constant proportion. so when 16 gm of hydrogen reacted with the 128 gm of oxygen It will lead to the formation of 144 gm of H2O. Therefore it verifies the law successfully. The Law of Conservation of mass is confirmed here.

ii ) The law that states atoms can never be created nor be destroyed.

iii ) Initially 1/16th of the mass of naturally occurring oxygen was taken as the atomic mass unit because this unit gave masses of most of the elements as whole numbers.
