this can be proved by doing experiment also

take an iron nail

put it in. beaker or container with just dry air in it and close the top of container

now take another nail

and put it in container filled with water upto the top

take third nail

put in container with half air and half water filled inside container

after sometime you will.see that the container with only air . the nail is not rusted

in second container filled with water

it also shows no rust

but the third container with both air and water has a rusty layer developed on nail

this proves that both air and water or moisture are required for rusting to take place
