In the given sentence, I is the only subject.
Along with my friends is an additional clause.
We can rearrange the sentence.
If we rearrange the sentence, it makes sense.
That is I am waiting for the movies, along with my friends.
We should not use are because we never I are waiting for the movies, along with my friends.
So, the correct form of verb is first person singular-am.
Hence, am is used here.
I along with my friends am waiting for the movies is correct.
