This highlighted cell is called a cell pointer. A cell pointer is also known as an active cell, a selected cell or a current cell. It is represented by a rectangular box in the spreadsheet. An active cell indicates which cell is worked on currently in the worksheet. The content of an active cell is displayed in the formula bar. By default, the active cell in a new spreadsheet is A1.

The cell boundary that specifies which cell is active at the moment is known as a cell pointer. This is mainly seen in excel sheets

. The bold boundaries can identify cells that are active at all sides.

The column and row of the active cell are also highlighted.
