I am a tree

I am a tree is a heart rending poem by Dennis Vincent Brutus.  It is autobiographical in nature and echoes his thoughts and protests against the colour discrimination known as apartheid in South Africa.

The poem is a short one composed in two non rhythmic quatrains and one quintet . It reflects the agony of a coloured man who craves for acceptance in the society that prevails in his country.

He compares his plight to a tree, old and mangled, left out in the dark , creaking painfully in the cold and rain.

He foregrounds his grief  in the second quatrain by comparing himself to a sheet cruelly twisted by the chilly wind squeezing out nothing but the shrill agony of pain.

He concludes that his cry will continue forever as he will never attain justice. He will forever remain inconsolable.
