Most people who have opinions about such things say that once you attain the human level, you won’t ever again reincarnate as a lower animal or insect.
This makes some sense to me, if the purpose of evolution is to develop new abilities, and the soul is evolving itself through multiple lifetimes.
According to this view, you created a human vehicle in which and with which to manifest and experience your human soul. Having a human soul, an insect body wouldn’t be appropriate, wouldn’t offer all the abilities of a human, so you couldn’t fit.
Then again, I’ve heard that some Buddhists say that beloved family dogs are sometimes reincarnated monks who almost attained nirvana, but not quite, so they came back for one more life of pure love, service, devotion. To reconcile this with the above belief, I guess we’d need to see Buddhist practice as essentially reducing the soul or mind in some ways, and in some ways, some Buddhists might agree.
Given the choice, I might want to come back as a dog, if I had a good master, got good raw food and not kibble, lots of walks and fetching the ball... Being a cat would be pretty cool, too, with good food and no litterbox, ugh. I could get into being a preying mantis, but I really don’t want to be a spider, or a fly. Actually, I’m hoping to be Paul Newman next life; man, that guy had a great life.
