Answer:

Lathyrism is caused by excessive dietary consumption of peas of the Lathyrus family, especially L. sativus (chickling pea).

The most familiar toxic Lathyrus species is Lathyrus sativus (Indian pea) which contains β-N-oxalylamino-l-alanine acid (β-ODAP), β-N-oxalyl-l-α,β-diaminopropionic acid, β-amino-propionitrile, and dimethylaminopropionitrile.

Khesari Dal (Lathyrus sativus) was once used as cattle feed, but its side-effects were found to be so dangerous that the practice was stopped. It was banned in 1961 as it contains di-amino-pro-pionic acid which could lead to paralysis of the lower body and could even cause numbness in the limbs and spine.

It is used as an adulterant in Arhar Dal.

Hope this helps!
