Mangroves are defined as a group of trees and shrubs that grow in the tropical and subtropical coastal inter-tidal regions. They grow richly in places where fresh water mixes with seawater and sediment consists of accumulated mud deposits. They have breathing or aerial roots where the roots grow above the soil and come up towards the air. The underground root system requires oxygen and the soil can not support the underground root system with sufficient oxygen, so the the the underground root system outgrows  aerial roots, which grow vertically up to the air above the ground and takes in air.
