Answer:

In the nervous system, a synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron or to the target effector cell.

A synapse is the junctional gap between two consecutive neurons where one neuron ends and another neurone begins. Synapse allows synaptic transmission of the nerve impulse to conduct only in one direction.

The individual neurons make contact through their processes. The terminal branches of the axon of one neurone lies very close to the dendrites of another neurone. This point of contact is called a synapse. Synapses ensure that nerve impulses travel in one direction only.
