He says that the black hound is being dead-helpful in the World War 1 (WW1). The hound carried messages to the soldiers and comforted them during typical situations. In the first stanza the hound is in action.

In the second stanza, the dong is tired after all the works, after the day and is gentle rather than being wild. Its eyes were no more aflame, his eyes clearly sense the tiredness to the poet.

Overally, the poet expresses his love for animals even if they are dangerous, wild and scary.
