There, I can imagine you smirking! Most Indians when asked this question instantly adopt a sarcastic smirk and start listing commonly believed negatives. This is our way of distancing ourselves from ‘them’ – our fellow countrymen and women who we believe are mocked and looked down upon abroad. Please make no mistake. ‘Them’ is you too. You are no different. We are all India. The good and the bad.

But it is this self-deprecating manner that hurts us the most. The world will look upon us as we see ourselves. So let us stop being harsh on ourselves.

Along with this self-critical attitude what is tough to digest is an over-eagerness to please others. Both attitudes probably come form a long history of political subjugation, which leaves behind a collective inferiority complex. Various traits in the Indian personality can be explained away in this historical context. But let us here focus on the positives for once…

So, what do you like about being an Indian? I love the fact that we are respectful to elders and generally friendly. I love our positive attitude towards life and the belief that everything will turn out for the best. I love our inborn spirituality and our belief in a greater force that guides us towards what is good for all. I am proud of the intelligence of the Indian mind and the fact that we are considered mathematical and computer wizards.

I like the fact that we wear the cloak of a 5000-year-old (scientists now suggest 8000 year-old) civilization proudly and believe we are the upholders of this wonderful legacy. I like the way we hold together as families and are always there for each other. Our deep love and care for our parents and our concern for our children is an increasingly rare quality in the western world. I love our deep sense of tolerance and fairness, however challenged it may seem at any point. I take hope from our resilience.

I appreciate how dearly we value friends and how we love to talk and exchange information, discuss politics, movies, books and the goings-on in the world, convinced that we can make a difference! I love the significance we give to education and values. I am proud of the fact that even in the middle of a street in a country we may be strangers to, we will stop and try to help someone lost, instead of shrugging and moving on…

Hello Mate,
I am proud to be Indian because of our country’s achievements in space and missile technology. India has launched a number of satellites in space for helping us in weather forecast, communications, medical research, and education. The missiles such as Agni, Prithvi strengthened our nation’s security and ensured a place in the elite group of the world’s powerful countries. Moreover, our scientists have lifted India’s pride by placing our Tri-colour on the moon and are now looking for landing in the planet Mars.

I am a citizen of the world because I am an Indian! I am proud to be an Indian because I am aware that it is a great privilege and an immense responsibility too. I am proud to be an Indian because I know what I represent.

India is a country where people respect elders. People of India live in peace and harmony. India is the only country where there are people of different languages, religions and race, but all of them live together in harmony.India is also a best example of “Unity is Strength”.
