SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • Halim’s salary is £22,500

  • Halim is entitled to £12,500 of his yearly tax free.

  • The rest of his salary will be taxed 20%.

  • Jenny says “This means that Halim will pay £4,500 in tax so he will have £18,000 left”.

TO DETERMINE

  • To Explain why Jenny is wrong.

  • The amount of money Halim have left after tax

EVALUATION

Here it is given that

Halim’s salary is £ 22,500

Halim is entitled to £ 12,500 of his yearly tax free.

Rest of his salary

= £ 22,500 - £ 12,500

= £ 10000

Now the rest of his salary will be taxed 20%

So the tax amount of Halim

 \displaystyle \sf{ = 10000 \times  \frac{20}{100} }

= £ 2000

So the amount of money Halim left

= £ 22500 - £ 2000

= £ 20500

Now Jenny says “This means that Halim will pay £4,500 in tax so he will have £18,000 left”.

So first mistake of Jenny is tax will £ 2000 instead of £ 4500

Second mistake Halim will save £ 20500 instead of £ 18000
