Answer:

I was writing a letter.

Explanation:

Past Continuous Tense denotes an action which that took place in the Past and continued for some time.

The structure of Past continuous Tense is-

  • Was/ Were+ Verb+ ing
  • "Was" is used if the Noun or Pronoun is Singular
  • "Were" is used if the Noun or Pronoun is Plural

For example-

  1. He was flying a kite.
  2. The boys were playing football

Here, as "I" is singular, the verb used is "was" and hence, the answer is-

I was writing a letter.

I was writing a letter.

The structure of the present continuous form of the statement sentence is:

  • Subject + is/am/are + Verb (ing) +Object

The structure of the past continuous form of the statement sentence is:

  • Subject + was/were + Verb (ing) +Object

The given sentence (I am writing a letter) is the statement sentence.

Since the modal auxiliary verb (am)  is changed into 'was' while converting it to a past continuous form.

Furthermore, the main verb remains the same as it is already in the Verb (ing) form in the sentence.
