Given : i and h , when divided by 9 and 12 respectively , leave remainders v and w respectively .

To Find :  what is the maximum value of v+w= ?

i) 5

ii) 19

iii) 12

iii) 6

Solution:

i divided by 9 leave remainders v

=>  i  = 9m  + v    where m is integer

and   0 ≤ v < 9

Hence maximum possible value of v is 8

h divided by 12 leave remainders w

=>  h = 12n  + w    where n is integer

and   0 ≤ w < 12

Hence maximum possible value of w is 11

maximum value of v+w=   8 + 11  = 19
