Indirect/Reported speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.
For example: Chris said,"I am going out tomorrow." (Direct)
Chris said that he was going out the next day. (Indirect)
In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day', 'you' changes to 'I' and many other words will have to be made.
I asked,"Are you hungry?" (Direct)
I asked whether he/she was hungry. (Indirect)
Hope it helps :)
