Answer: Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Explanation:

Dr Abdul Kalam is referring to the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

He once stressed unlike other countries which time and again invaded, captured lands and conquered the minds of Indian, India always believed  in respecting the freedom of other countries. This made him firmly believe that "FREEDOM" should be protected, nurtured and built on.  He was of the view that we can only gain respect if we are free.

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was the beginning of many uprising against the atrocities of the East India Company in India. On 10th May 1857 the rebellion took the shape of a mutiny by the sepoys of the Company's army garrison in Meerut.

It then spread  into many civilian rebellions and mutinies mainly around  central India and the upper Gangetic plain. There were also sporadic incidents revolt in the northern and eastern region. It soon became a threat for the British power in that region. It was eventually controlled on 20th June 1858 after the rebels were defeated in Gwalior .
