Coming back to the point...In my perceptive, the poet here states 'if', from which it can be clearly understood that he is just considering the possibility of something perishing twice. Here, first he opts to die in the fire, while, 'if' he had another chance, he would pick ice, is what that has to be taken into the mind.

(ii) The crow shaking the snow off of the branch of the hemlock tree is what changes his mood. He has turned from remorseful and gloomy to happy.
