Answer:

One afternoon, I, my wife and our 5 year old daughter were visiting the local toy store.

With my wife leading the way, I held our daughter on my shoulders, putting one hand on her side in order to give her support as she clutched on to my collar.

As we entered through the gate of the store, I looked at her just to see her expression.

With eyes wide open, I could see the delight in her eyes standing in the middle of so many toys. I let her down to go find something interesting.

A few minutes later, I saw her with 2 figures in her hand, as she took small steps towards me but was visibly a little sad. I didn’t know anything about the toy in her hand, but her expression had confusion.

I took her up in my arms and asked.

“What’s the matter sweetheart?”

“Dad, I like both of them, but if I take one, the other would be lonely and I don’t want the other to be lonely, because lonely people cry and I don’t want this one to cry.”

For a minute, I was taken aback. Such innocence.

“Let’s do one thing. Let’s buy both of them okay? Then that way, no one would be lonely.”

She smiled. Happy and glowing as ever, as I put her down at her hearts wishes.

I smiled, the inner me was happy.

All of a sudden I looked over to my wife, who to my astonishment was in tears, listening to our conversation, I went over to her. And asked,

“What? Why are you crying? “

“When I was small, my mother brought me to this same store; I was in the same dilemma as well, where I wanted to buy 2 dolls and when I went with them to her, she didn’t say anything. I didn’t know anything about our financial troubles but then, don’t mothers want their children to have everything in the world? I stood beside her as she was talking on the payment counter. I remember people watching us with suspicious eyes. I couldn’t understand what was happening and why was she taking so long to talk. It was later I had realized that my mother didn’t have enough money to buy two of them so she had put some of her jewelry on hold and asked to make the payment afterwards, just so I could have those 2 dolls.”

With tears in her eyes, I saw my wife remember those tough times.

I held her. Tight in my arms, and said

“You will never have to see such troubled times.”

Clearly relieved she said, “I knew I married the right idiot.” And she was in tears
