I can't understand a.m and p.m

a.m which means anti medium and pm mean post medium.and in night 12 to afternoon 12 is called am and before night 12 to afternoon 12 we called pm

a.m = Arithmetic meridian... used between morning 12 o clock to 1 o clock.
p.m = post meridian... used between afternoon 1 o clock to night 12 o clock.
