let us add 3 and 4 and multiply the sum by 5.
(3+4)x 5
7 x 5
=35
now multiply 3 and 4 separately by 5 and then add their products.
3 x 5 + 4 x 5
 15   +   20
=     35
in both cases, we get 35 so we can say that-
(3+4) x 5=3 x 5+4 x 5
similarly, (7-3) x 5=7 x 5-3 x 5

this is known as distributive property of multiplication. it is useful for multiplying large numbers.
