The answer is XYLEM

COMPONENTS OF XYLEM:

  • Xylem is composed of four elements namely tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres.

  • Xylem parenchyma is the only living component of cell.

  • Remaining elements of xylem are dead.

  • Tracheids form the major water conducting element in pteridophytes and gymnosperms.

  • Vessels are present only in angiosperms .

  • Xylem parenchyma stores substance such as resins , tanins , etc,.

  • Xylem fibre is highly narrow and has thickened wall responsible for mechanical support.

FUNCTIONS OF XYLEM:

  • Xylem is responsible the transport of water , dissolved mineral and some hormones.

  • Root hairs absorb the water from soil and transport it upto the xylem.

  • Xylem transports the water along the length of the plant.

  • It is commonly called wood and it occupies the central region of plant.

  • It gives mechanical strength to the plants
