first step -- If you want to memorize the valencies of the elements :-
-> First, Learn the name of the elements from the periodic table by order.
-> If you do this you will get the atomic no. i.e. No. of protons. You will also get the No. of electrons. {No. of protons = No. of electrons}
-> Valency is the No. of valence electrons gained or lost by an element.
-> Rember the formula i.e. 2(n)^2. This is the formula from which we are able to know that how many electrons can have in an orbit/Shell.
For e.g.- K is the first orbit.
Therefore, 2(1)^2 = 2(1) = 2.
=> K shell can have max. two electrons.
-> By this we can get the No. of valence electrons and that's the valency. {Because we know atomic No. and the formula, we can find the No. of electrons present in the outermost orbit/shell}.
second step -- its easy to memorise symbols & valencies if u know how to do it first learn all the names of elements in periodic table is those elements have latin names learn them also not necessarily in order learn them such that if u know first few letters in name u can say its entire name then write them down onto a paper ( by seeing ) then write the symbols once or twice by seeing then take a new sheet see the names of elements that u ve written ( but dont see the symbols u wrote before cover then using a paper or something) now try predicting the symbol do it few times at first u will make mistakes but as they say practice makes man perfect u will learn them perfectly in a few days if u want to memorise valancies u will have to learn the order of elements in periodic first learn the first period then learn the elements in their respective groups 1-4 groups will have their group no as their valencies mostly 5-8 will have 8-their group no as their valencies 8th group will have 0 valency dont worry about that but there will be some exceptions in 5th period where inert pair effect takes place
third step ---- to remember valencies ...first step is to memorize the elements 1 to 30 at least because they are often come then as youl will knoe the atomic no ...just do the mental electronic configuration and see the valency...like sodium is atomic bo 11. == 2,8,1 valency is 1
chlorine is atomic no 17 === 2,8,7 valency 1
for compunds u need to memorise the valencies of few ions (positive and negative)
its a must
