The narrator was surprised to see Baldev with gifts.He could not gather the courage to refuse all the gifts .The narrator should have admitted openly that he had done nothing to save his son. It's not only for the gifts,but the heaviness in his heart would have left him devasted.He would have felt very low self-esteem.So,it was better that there and then only he should refuse to accept the gifts.
