The cell membrane decides what goes in and out of the cell (option 4).

  • The cell membrane or the plasma membrane is the outermost covering of the cell in animals and the penultimate covering in plant cells, surrounded by the cell wall on the outside.
  • The membrane is a semi-liquid structure which consists majorly of phospholipids in the form of two layers. The region between the two layers contains hydrophobic tails of the phospholipid, while the exposed parts of each layer have the hydrophilic head which may be associated with proteins or carbohydrates.
  • The semi-liquid state of the bi-layered membrane gives the cell flexibility and it can withstand stress. The hydrophobic-hydrophilic difference makes the membrane semi-permeable, allowing only certain substances to move through.
