start step by step by learning the notes and try to match them on tanpura( if you are talking about indian music) ..and then you can easily sing rag and other songs and after learning the reads start learning the theory from any classical books which has easy explanation (basic)..... and you can easily understand and sing or read music and i am only a student of classical music from 2013 and thats how i started and i would recommend this to everyone... always take the baby steps first.. ☺
